The Farmer’s Hat in Part 7

The Farmer

In Twin Peaks Part 7 on Showtime, Deputy Andy Brennan visits The Farmer who is played by Edward “Ted” Dowling. The thing that caught my eye in this scene was the hat worn by the Farmer.

Andy and the Farmer

In the scene, Andy attempts to question the Farmer about who was driving the truck in front of his house. The Farmer promises to tell Andy the whole story but not at his home. They agree to meet at 4:30 p.m. by the logging road above Sparkwood and 21, just past the Jones’ house down by the creek.

The Farmer’s hat reminded me of other costume hats used in Twin Peaks such as Windom Earle’s C-DM hat seen in Episode 2016 of Season 2 and identified on the incredible Twin Peaks Props website.

Windom Earle's Hat

Thanks to the release of the Twin Peaks Season 3 Blu-ray set, I identified the hat worn by the Farmer on December 8 shortly after locating the vinyl album used in Diane’s apartment.

The hat was was made by Erroll’s Bulldozing, an excavating contractor based in Seattle, Washington.

I located the business by searching “Bulldozing” and the telephone number printed on the hat.

Sadly, I’ve not found an actual hat for sale (trust me, I tried … eBay, Etsy, etc). I couldn’t locate a company website either, but it appears the company was established in 1985. Perhaps the hat was made as a promotional item or worn by employees.

I’m guessing the hat was used as “Seattle, WA” is printed on the hat (a way to infuse Pacific Northwest authenticity). “Twin Peaks” the show often referenced Seattle despite the “Twin Peaks” the town being located closer to Spokane, Washington (7-hour drive to Seattle versus 2-hour drive to Spokane).

If you have a hat for sale, please let me know.
